I definitely want to clean my laptop before I go to a tropical environment. Can I just lift the keyboard and clean inside? Is is safe and easy enough for me to do it (instead of couse of paying the service)?
Anything else that I should know before I start, apart from turning the power off?

If you are planning to open the computer, it's a good idea to remove the battery as well as the power supply. Make sure you have the correct tools, or you risk stripping the screw. Usually it isn't necessary to clean the inside of laptops unless they are in a very dusty environment.
You should always ground yourself before working with computers, and avoid walking on carpet after doing so.
I assume you want to get inside the computer, but if you just want to take off the keyboard (to clean it), you are better off using compressed air or a small vacuum, as the keyboards do not detach as iBook keyboards do.

somehow I thought I had seen its keyboard detached at a mac store - not so sure now. I was worried as I heard that 'fungus' could be a serious threat in a high humidity (90% and up) environment. Maybe I am just being paranoid.

I dont think it will be a problem, I live in florida with high humidity and ive been in higher with my macbook and never had any problems.
