Can I run OS X on this g3?

A friend gave me a beige G3 (233/512k cache/192mb RAM/4gb/24x CD) today, running OS 9.2.2. I was wondering if it's possible to run OS X on (doesn't need to be fast, it's just something for my computer illiterate mom (she usually uses our g4's, but wants something in her room to write letters on, and occasionally surf the web...and anything's better than the old Pentium 133 with 16 megs of RAM that's been gathering dust in there. All the apps that we own are OS X, and I'd like to throw Office, Safari, and iTunes on there for here. Possible?

Possible? Yes, technically it fulfils the requirements and is a "supported" machine. However, as I don't own one, I cannot attest to it's usability.... anybody with a beige G3?.... Beuller?.... Beuller?

Actually, I just installed Jaguar, and it's VERY snappy. I intend to use it as a UNIX box. In Aqua, it actually feels quite a bit faster than my iMac g4 with 256 megs of RAM. I've heard something on here about how Aqua slows down over time, and if you make a new user account, and switch all your settings over, it feels like you're flying, the speed difference is so great. Anyone know anything about this?

I've installed OS X in old Macs but them being faster than G4 Macs? No way! :p :D

Except if your G4 OS X config is messed up or something...

Then I read closer your 1st reply where you were saying that is for your mom which of course for the things you mentioned more than enough :D ;)

:)

I couldn't believe it either....but window response is snappier. I click an icon in the dock, it bounces once or twice, and opens. Do the same thing on my iMac, and it bounces 5-6x. Windows take a second of lag time to close on the G4, but almost instantaneously on the beige G3. Guys, what gives?! Oh, the monitor makes a high-pitched noise, so my mom decided she'll keep the PeeCee, and I'm using the G3 strictly as a UNIX box.

not sure, cause I don't have one, but I used to work on a biege g3 233 and it had internal scsi. (I'm not sure if that is standard or the bureau had upgraded to the scsi hd) Faster drive - faster start-up
