Can play WMVs from Mail but not from WMPlayer or VLC

When I receive a WMV as an attachment in Apple Mail I can play it just fine using WMPlayer.

When I save this file to my local hard drive and then try to play it with WMPlayer or VLC, I receive the following error - "The specific stream type is not recongnized."

Why can I play these files through Apple Mail but not with WMPlayer or VLC after saving them?

One other thing; If I attach the WMV file back into an email, I can then play the WMV file again.

System Info:
Dual 1.42 G4
OS 10.4.3
Media Player 9.0 Build 3307
VLC 0.8.4

Have same problem.
Save my file on another harddisc. Then replay works.
Do not know why.
Would be interested to know.
 
Apparently some Windows Media Player video files won't play back if they are played from a directory with non-ASCI characters in the name (eg: ü î á). This 'may' explain why it plays from the Mail.app temp directory (where mail attachments are stored when they are downloaded), but not from another location you save it too.
