I have some spare HI-FI speakers, is it possible to connect the ipod to the speakers just llike that. I suppose some sort of adapter is required to convert the jack to the standard speaker cables, each one being split into two wires? Or isn't it possible?

well, if you just had regular headphone jack style speakers, indeed you could use them, no problem.

When it comes to the HiFi stuff, this might get tricky... As far as i know, there is no adapter build just for the ipod like that... But im looking.

When I read your post, I instantly thought of this Griffin Pro Speaker Breakout Cable!

If all else fails, maybe you could use that, and find a mini audio to headphone adapter.

But lets see what I can find online for ya =)

What make & model speakers?

If they are big speakers designed for use with a big, home stereo system, then NO - the iPod has nothing approaching the wattage needed to drive such speakers.

No it won't work. Unless you are using powered speakers, i.e. speaker that contain their own power amp.

If your speakers have only speaker cable connections, and don't need to be plugged into an AC outlet, then you have unpowered speakers.

The ipod output jack, has only a headphone amp, running at a much much lower output level than what unpowered speakers need.

If you have a stereo receiver to go with your speakers, then it's easy.
Just connect the speakers to the receiver with speaker cables as usual, and connect the Ipod to the receiver via one of it's inputs. Anything labeled AUX, CD, Tuner, etc.. will be fine. Just don't use inputs labeled 'phono'.

You will most likely need a cable or adapter. The ipod needs a Stereo 'mini jack', or 'headphone jack', or '3.5 mm stereo phone plug' (all different names for the same thing), and your Stereo receiver will most likely need Stereo 'RCA jacks', just like the outputs of a cd player.

Hope that helps

I guess I should of thought of that huh... ::ha::

I know I have some older PC speakers that i, from time to time plug into my iPod... But now that i think about it, they need power.

Sorry if my posts confused you.
