Cannot download ANYTHING from web (jaguar)

I am running 10.2.3 and recently I have been unable to download anything from the web via a browser (any browser). I can download if the file is a direct link, by control-clicking and choosing download link to disk. But I cannot download by simply clicking on the link. I cannot download anything from a site such as download.com , since they are all re-directs, a download never starts for me.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
Safari works just fine with Download.com automatic downloads for me. Sorry, don't know what's stopping it for you.
 
maybe it just takes a while? how long have you waited. do you get errors or what happens? Sorry that sound obvious.

Could it be firewall related?
 
It will either be the MIME handling settings are messed up, or your proxy settings, or perhaps firewall.

Try deleting all the Safari configuration files to reset it to its default settings. Then, check there's nothing too weird in your proxy settings under Network Preferences.
