Cannot install OS X - grey screen with cross out

Hi, I just purchased a Powerbook G4. The previous owner reformatted the HD, but did not install an operating system. When I turned it on for the first time there was a small folder on a grey screen with a question mark alternating with the apple logo. I inserted the OS X Panther install disc and now the screen is still grey with a circled cross in the middle. I have no idea what to do.

With the Panther disc in the drive, restart while holding the C key. Then you should be able to install the system.
 
where did you get the panther disk? is it a retail install cd, or is it a restore cd? many times, if its a cd that came with a different mac for the purpose to restore it to factory fresh install, it will only work on the mac it came with.
 
thanks....i wasn't sure what the original system was. once I figured that out I started the system up as you said. it's working perfectly now.
