Cannot save to SMB share

When I try to copy a file to my HPSmart Media server using connect to server smb://serverip/share, I get this error:

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "file name" could not be read or written. error code -36.

After clicking Ok to confirm the error message, I copy the file again and get a dialog box to stop or replace. If I click replace, it works.

This happens to every file on the first attempt to copy the files to the server. I'm running 10.5.8 and the latest updates.

Not sure what's going on. This started happen after I ran all the latest updates.

The lovely, classic error -36. Sigh.
Error -36 is for an I/O error - the bad news it can be for a number of reasons.
So more info and more troubleshooting... and a look at exact errors in Console app would help too.
