I am no longer able to boot from CD either in X or 9. I am using the SuperDrive in a DP 1 gig G4. I was able to boot from CD when I first got it. What happens is that it acts like it's booting from CD and gets part way [right before extensions load in 9] and halts. This happens both for the OS X CD and the OS 9 CD (any dot version). Also, it happens in either OS. Very odd.
Normally it wouldn't be an issue, but I need to boot from CD so I can run DiskWarrior on the main HD.
Any thoughts?
