i'm the only mac os x user in a pc lan. i run 10.3.3.
we're linked together thru a D-LINK switch. All other users have xp. we set up a workgroup. everyone has a static ip. between the pcs no problem. my mac isnt even recognized on the internal lan, allthough i can connect to the internet.

i have set the name of the workgroup in the smb settings in directory access.
i have enables windows sharing.

in the ethernet utilities i checked netstat/display informations of routing table: it finds the different ips of connected pcs
i checked portscan and tried with one of the pcs: it found open ports.

but:

i couldn't PING either of the pcs (nor can they with me)
and no way to display the list of pcs connected in the workgroup doing shift+option+k,
nor connecting to a single pc by option+k and smb protocol.

where's the issue?

it seems to me that the windows file sharing port 139 in mac uses NETBIOS, but the pc's only use the tcp/ip protocol: could this be the reason?

Are the XP boxes the Home edition or Pro edition? Are there any firewalls in the way on either platform?

The netbios could be the problem, I'm not positive though. My home PCs have had networking trouble before without it installed.

Even with Windows File Sharing turned off, you should be able to see the other PCs. Have you tried using Connect to server... and entering in smb://#.#.#.#? Sometimes the network browsing under OS X isn't very useful.

i have connected my ibook to PC Network.

this i can do:
1. browsing through the website both internal and live ip.
2. i can browse through the network using smb://<pc-ip>
3*. PC users can browse through my ibook via ftp://<ibook-ip> (there must be a better way of doing this.)
4. print through network.

* you must enable file sharing and have created an account for them to login to your mac.

did the PC users able to see through the network?
yes, but unfortunately, they see me as localhost, and when they want to browse me Windows will shows and errors or open their own local pc. (i didn't even bother this since no one is going to access me. :))

i check with other PC, the did enable/install the NetBios.

hope this will help.
