Can't download anything!!

For some reason, my Macbook just started not letting me download anything at all. I did some research on the internet and found out it may have to do with my settings because they're set to downloading to the desktop. When I try, the download module comes up but says "cannot create file". When I try to save something to desktop it says "Safari failed to save the file “whatevertheifileis.jpg” to the downloads folder." HELP!!

01. By default, 'Safari' saves all downloaded files to the 'Desktop', until the user (via 'Safari's 'Safari, Preferences...' menu items' toolbars' 'Genera' panel) sets the 'Save downloaded files to:' popup menu to save the downloads elsewhere.

02. The 'download module' is a 'Downloads' window.

03. Posting the MacBook model, MacOS X version number, 'Safari' version number, web site and file names attempted to be downloaded - may be helpful to others, willing to assist you.

Can you save to a different folder, by changing the Safari preferences? Can you create other files on the desktop? Can you download files with an alternate browser, such as Firefox?
