can't get scanner to work

i have a canon mx310 which uses image capture for scanning. Overview and options work but the scan function is faded which means it won't start. i have downloaded and installed current scanning driver for mx310 but this hasn't helped. any advice?
 
I have a Canon scanner. I don't think you need Image Capture if you have the Canon driver installed.

If all else fails try running the scanner with VueScan. They have a demo version ifyou need to check before you buy.

I also have a Canon scanner, the Canon CanoScan 8600F. If I understand correctly, Image Capture uses a TWAIN driver that is installed with Canon's other software. Whereas it is true that you don't need to use Image Capture, you will certainly want to use it. It is true that you may scan directly into any TWAIN-compatible graphics application. However, Image Capture is miles ahead of ScanGear, Canon's TWAIN plug-in for third-party apps.
