Can't initialize WD External Drive

I used my Western Digital 115 Gig external drive on a PC and want to switch it to my Mac - when the drive was hooked up to the Mac I got a dialouge box asking to Initialize, Ignore or Eject - when I chose Initialize it opened the Mac's Disk Utility where you erase or partition the drive to be recognized - I selected the drive from the sidebar and tried to Partition the drive (I saved it as a Mac Extended Journaled drive with 1 partiton) - but all I got was the spinning ball that would go on for as long as 15 minutes - I then initialized the external drive while booted up from my original install disk and now it wont show up in the sidebar of the Disk Utility window at all now - I'm wondering since I initialized the extenal drive from the OS 9 boot up disk my computer can't read it as I just have OS X installed on my computer - Could that be? - I also read somewhere that Mac has trouble recognizing large external drives and supplied the Apple link so I'm trying them as well to see if I can get help with this problem - Thanks - Macrsd
p.s. specs of my computer below

AFAIK, at the "initialise, ignore or eject" window you should have proceeded to erase the drive prior to partitioning it ... you could re-connect the drive to your PC and erase/format it then try over again on your Mac to see if Disc Utility recognises it when connected ....
