can't install OSX Server 10.2 on G4 1.0 GHz

I tried to install OS 10.2 Server on a G4 single processor 1.0 Ghz machine with OS 10.2.6 already installed. The OS 10.2 Server installer stated that it would not install over a newer version of the OS. I thought I could just boot from the 10.2 server disk and erase the disk with disk utilities and then install OS 10.2 server; however, the G4 refused to boot from the OS 10.2 server CD-ROM. The G4 would only boot from an OS 10.2.3 CD-ROM or higher. I reinstalled OS 10.2.3, but the OS 10.2 server software would still not install. I thought I could install OS 10.1 and then install OS 10.2 server; however, the G4 would not boot from the OS 10.1 CD-ROM. What steps do I need to take to get OS 10.2 Server installed on the G4 1.0 GHz computer?

To install Mac OS X Server 10.2 (odds are it is 10.2.3) on a system that came with something later (like 10.2.6) you first should do a fresh install of the system's original operating system. When you are finished, put the Server CD in (while still running in regular Mac OS X) and install the MacOSXServerInstall.mpkg metapackage. You should find it on the CD here as I recall:
  • /Welcome to Mac OS X Server/MacOSXServerInstall/MacOSXServerInstall.mpkg

When done, restart.

Now run software update and bring the system up to Mac OS X Server 10.2.8 with all the patches and stuff that is needed.

I reinstalled Mac OS 10.2.3 and tried to install OS X Server via the method you described using the "MacOSXServerInstall.mpkg"; however, I got a message stating that OS X Server would not install over the newer version of OS X already installed. I must have a copy of Mac OS X Server 10.2 or 10.2.2. I guess I'm SOL. :( Thanks for the reply RacerX.

I was able to find the e-mail Apple sent me with a link to the directions. You'll find a better (clearer?) version of the instructions here.

Maybe there is something you can get from this page that'll help.

What version of Mac OS X Server do you have? Like the instructions on that page, I had Server v10.2.3, and the system I was installing on came with Mac OS X v10.2.5.
