cant log onto my mac - HELP

can anyone help me out here. for some unknown reason i cant log onto my mac. i get to the user namer screen on OSX and click on the name, it loads the top tool bar in the finder(one with the time/date and so on) then goes back to the log in page. --- help???!!??
will i have to reinstall osx? - i really dont want to have to do this? i havent got a password on the comp so its not this that is wrong can someone please help asap.....

Is it OS X version 10.2 or later? If so you can hold down shift while booting and it should boot into safe mode. If nothing else, that should allow you to get your files and do some debugging. From there you should also be able to create a new user and then when you reboot see if OS X will allow you to log in as that user.
