I've an iMac 17" with OS X 10.2.8 and I've buy an external HD Maxtor of 300 GB, but I cant mount the volume. I've tried to with Disk Utility but it seem not to recognize so bigger disk, when I try to mount it does nothing and volume never appears in desktop. However, Maxtor HD appears in the left list od Disk Utility.

Does someone know why I can't??, Does someone had the same problem??

Thanks in advance!

Has the drive been formated? Use Disk Utility to format the drive. You may need to partition it. First, use the Erase tab. Make sure you use Mac Os Extended and if you want to use it with Classic, make sure you select install OS 9 drivers.

Yes, I've tried to erase first and format in OS extended, but when I try to make a partition, disk utility seems to freeze. I can't neither quit disk utility nor finish partition.

I have a 300GB Maxtor that formatted fine in Disk Utility and I had partitioned it into 2 volumes using Disk Utilities. If there is a media defect (bad spot on the disk surface), use the option to zero all data when you format and it will take a long time but the formatting process will flag all the bad sectors and make sure you don't use it in storing data.

One word of caution. After spending a few days populating the drive with tons of data, I made the mistake of plugging it into a friend's G3 that was running OS9.0.4. It did not even recognize the drive but it did render the drive unuseable. So after you have your drive populated with 300 GB of data, be careful what Machine you plug it into. I would avoid any machine with OS older than 9.2.2.

Good luck,

Thanks for your suggestions and advices, finally I've plugged it into my brother's eMac and disk utility has had no problems to format it, then I've plugged it again in my iMac and it has worked OK. Maybe I had not enough free space in my HD (about 500 Mb) and disk utility couldn't work OK??

It could be that permissions were not set correctly. Open Disk utility>first aid tab and click on your internal hard drive. have it verify and repair permissions.
