Can't Open Netinfo

Please help me, I am having a few related problems with persmissions etc. in OSX.2.3

1. When I open Netinfo Manager, I get the error: domain (null) has no root account..... which doesn't make sense, because there is obviously is a root user, and I CAN authenticate in the Terminal, but I can't do anything in Netinfo Manager. All drop down menu items are grayed out.

2. I also have always had problems using Vim to change the httpd.conf file so that I can set up virtual domains and change the loading of php modules. I did it in OSX.1, about a year ago, and it was mostly by trial and error. I had problems with permissions mostly.. I think.

I thought with Jaguar allowing me to change permissions in the folder view it would be easier, but I still can't. I get the error in Vim, "swap file, something or other". Is this because it's in use maybe? I've changed permissions in both folder view and Terminal, but it won't let me save!

Is there an easier application than Vim. In Windows I could probably use notepad!

I know the answers are probably simple... as most are... but I have wasted too much time on this problem already. Please help!

Thanks,

Slo

Slo,

I moved your thread to the Darwin forum because it's the appropriate place to talk about "tinkering under the hood" of OS X. And NetInfo Mgr. is really tinkering under the hood.

I'm pretty ignorant about it. I'll throw a couple ideas at you and then shut up and let someone who knows what s/he's talking about help you:

OS X ships with the root user disabled. Have you enabled it? Also, I noticed a Security menu in NetInfo. Did you authenticate?

Check Apple's Knowledgebase about enabling root.

Apologies if this was not helpful.

Thanks for trying, but the odd thing is that the "security" drop down, as are the other drop downs, is unavailable to me! I know it should be there, but it isn't!

First I'd try the Repair Previleges utility from Apple to fix any permissions problems you might have.

To edit httpd.conf you need to use either sudo or log in as root.

Thanks, but I noticed on the system requirements for the utility, that it was for x.1.5 only, but I gave it a whirl anyways, and it "unexpectdly quit"....

Would there be any reason that I can't overwrite the httpd.conf file, if I have logged in as root. What the heck does the "swap file warning" mean anyways? What is a "swap file"

Should I open it through the Vim "open" dialouge box, or through Terminal?

I don't really like Vim, is there any more user friendly utility or app to use.

I really want to administer the server, but I have had nothing but problems using the Terminal and Vim. There must be an easier way, other than the way too expensive and overkill OSX Server. I have even tried OpenWeb, with bad results.

Can't somebody make an OSX Auqa GUI for just Apache? I don't need a network server.

I know to a Darwin user, it must be trivial, but I really can't do anything right in the Darwin side of OSX. Help!!!!
