can't play vcd's in os x?

hey, i have os x jaguar and some burned movies and have tried to play them in os x but it doesn't work, then tried it in os 9, and worked fine, is there a certain way to play them in os x? or no
 
iTunes does not have the right codecs...

there are out at least 2 programs for OS X that do play vcds, but i have forgotten their names (and have not played mine since ages). Have you had a look on versiontracker? I wish i remembered the names..

Well, I'm afraid it's worse than a missing codec or needing just another bit of player software. The real issue is that MacOSX still doesn't have the right bits in the cdrom drivers to deal with whitebook compliant VCDs.

This has been covered on the forum before in this thread. I didn't realize until I went looking for it that it's been well over a year since that thread, and the problem with VCDs is still with us.

I'm not real pleased with Apple's lack of attention for this detail, especially since all the codecs are already there. As I mentioned before, if I use a Windows machine to rip the mpeg files from the VCD, they'll play fine from the HD, or if I just re-burn the file to a normal data cd.

I'm also not pleased that the VLC guys claim that it'll play VCD's, when all it'll really do is play VCD files on MacOSX.

Of course, if you boot to MacOS9, you can use the QT player to play them, but booting into 9 just to watch a video is more work than it's worth IMO... So, the answer is, no - you cannot play VCD's on MacOS X yet (still).. :mad:

Huh? VLC doesn't just play VCD files, it plays VCDs just fine. I play em all the time. Plays SVCDs too, no problem. Also plays DivX without the need to put them through stupid DivX Doctor or Validator. VLC rocks. MacVCD X plays VCDs as well. It'll only play SVCDs if the QT MPEG-2 component is installed, though. I prefer VLC. Plays more stuff and is free.
 
Well... I stand corrected. After your post, I went back and poked at the options available in VLC a bit more. Turns out the trick (if you can call it that) is to do an 'Open Disc' - not 'Open File'. Duh.. :)

However, VLC does seem to have a problem with my Terapin-recorded VCD's - it won't play tracks continuously on the disc, although I can manually choose a track to play by choosing the starting point to be Title x... Might be a VCD 1.1 problem, though - I've got the StarWars I on VCD, and it handles it correctly (it's a VCD 2.0 disc). I'll have to copy one of my 1.1 discs to get it to 2.0 and see if it does better with it that way...

That'll teach me to RTFM a bit more often... ;)
 
VLC plays VCDs for me but on my G3 350 its kinda weird... on OS 9 I used another piece of software that played VCDs infinitelly better :)

I have not tested MacVCD yet :)
(I am a cheapskate :p)

I've been using MacVCD for about 3 weeks now and really like it. VLC is great and free but it doesn't seem to have the degree of control that MacVCD does.

Oh, I wish I had a G4, even after shutting every other program down, turning off all the lights in the house, lighting a candle to the Gods of Video my iMac DV 400 just doesn't have the oomph to play vcds well.... There is a Powerbook G4 in my future, but how long from now is the question.....
