Can't read a Safari PDF document

When I open a PDF document with Safari, or any other browser, only the first page opens and I cannot read the document. I used to be able to do this.
It used to be that when I would select a PDF document with Safari, the Adobe
Reader application would open and I was able to read the document. When I
try a "Save as" of the Safari page, I get a message that says, (in this instance)

The document “13019_INST_09_VIEW.pdf”
could not be exported as “13019_INST_09_VIEW”.

I wonder by what incompetent doing on my part I have bungled this part of my system, which otherwise works like clockworks.

Do you have the AdobePDFViewer.plugin Internet Plug-in installed? If so, then make sure that you have not set Quicktime as the viewer for the PDF MIME Type.

Same thing for me. Must be newest Safari: 5.1.

I've checked Quicktime, Adobe Reader, & Preview for default pdf viewer. None are. I also removed AdobePDFViewer.plugin. All to no avail.

All I can do presently in any browser is "Save As" and save to desktop & view with Preview.
