Can't rebuild iPhoto '11 (9.1.1 (531)) T

This began when iTunes crashed while syncing with an iPod. The crash occurred every time while compressing and transferring photos from iPhoto to the iPod. When I changed the setting to omit photos from the iPod sync, the crashing stopped.

Since the problem appears to be in iPhoto, I rebuilt the Library. All of the repair and rebuild options work, including "Rebuild the photos' small thumbnails", but iPhoto crashes on "Rebuild all the photos' thumbnails".

The iTunes crash is solved and replaced with an iPhoto crash.

The iPod has 80 GB, of which about 25 are left after synching the music. The iPhoto Library is about 45 GB which, after compression and dropping the originals of modified photos, ought to fit easily. I tried synching again, this time selecting photo albums amounting to about half the iPhoto Library. The sync went perfectly, using about 5GB of space on the iPod.

Presumably, the problem resides with one or more photos that were not in the albums I synched. It might be possible to trace the source down to one or a few photos, but if I succeeded in doing that I'm not sure what I would do about it. Maybe export the photo, delete it, and then re-import it?

Any suggestion for what to do about this? Does the above sound like a good approach?

In a thread on the forum there is a suggestion from an older version of iPhoto that editing in Photoshop CS might be a source of problems; I have been using Photoshop Elements for years without problems until, possibly, now.

This latest version of iPhoto does not interface as cleanly with Photoshop Elements as earlier versions did. When using the external editor, the earlier versions would save the Photoshopped photo in the Modified folder. The current version of iPhoto creates a new photo entry with, I think, a new Original. Anyway, there's no point in having two entries of the same photo, one Photoshopped and one not, so I have been deleting the extra. Could that activity be messing up the thumbnail data base?
