I have by mistake placed some files on the desktop and when I try to move them to trach the system tells me that they are in use, and they are not.
Can someone explain this to me. I am on a G4 running OS X 10.2.

I get that message at times with zip disks. Click once on the file, then click on the desktop. Make sure the application it was created in is not running. Then trash it. Try using the keyboard to trash it. Click once on the file, then use apple key + delete key.

You could always use Terminal...

sudo rm -f /path/to/file (drag the file(s) to Terminal after the "-f " (with a space)) and give it your password.
