Can't see other machines on network

i'm using a dual 2.5ghz PowerPC G5 running max os x version 10.3.9 and i have a intermittant (more so than not) problem not being able to see the other machines on my network. i usually click on go/network and itwill bring up a new finder window with all my network machines in it. lately it opens a finder window that has nothing in it. i've tried rebooting the machine (several times) and it doesnt seem to help. i've also start the other machines first then the "problem machine" and it also did nothing. i can get on the internet fine and if i ping the i.p. addresses of the other machines it sees them and seems to work fine. the machine will also print to a networked printer with no problems. i also noticed that when i open a finder window that lists my hard drives it shows "network" as being one of them and says the last date modified was dec 31, 1903 at 7:00pm (i somehow believe this to be wrong). i would say these problems occur 70% of the time i use the machine, which is on a daily basis.

any help you can give a new mac convert would be appreciated.

thanks

Being a new mac convert myself, I can understand why this is a problem.

I'm not to sure why it's not working all the time, plus I have the same problem so I hope that someone else reply's that knows.

What I do is after clicking the desktop or finder, at the top, you'll find a menu called "go", click that and there should be a connect to server button (forgive me, I'm not infront of my mac right now so I'm doing this by memory), it would be the last button. from there you can type in the name of the computer or the ip address and connect that way. You can also put that server as being part of your favorites list by typing in the ip address and clicking the "+" sign at the bottom. Hope that helps
