Can't shutdown and apps not responding

Hi, I just went on my Mac and tried to use some of the apps (Chrome, Adium, Quicktime, Mail, etc.), but everything seems to have stopped responding. Some won't even start and just goes straight to "Application Not Responding." I've tried to Force Quit the apps, but it doesn't seem to work. Occasionally, a window pops up saying "Logout Time-out" (or something like that) and leads to a Force Quit. However, the apps don't really Quit and continue to "Not Respond." I'm not sure what happened to it, but nothing seems to be working and it's really frustrating.

I've also tried to restart and shut down the computer a few times, but the computer is running very slowly, and the rainbow wheel persistently turns. In order to shut down, I had to do a "hard shut down", which I know is very bad for the computer. I'm not sure what to do now.

I've thought about rebooting the whole computer and try a system restore. But since I haven't been able to back up my computer yet, I'm reluctant to do so. I'm not even sure I can backup my files now, since none of the apps seem to be working properly.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do?
Thank you for your help in advance; it is GREATLY appreciated!

What kind of Mac do you have? Which version of MacOSX do you run?

Boot from the installation DVD and run Disk Utility to look at the condition of your system disk - repair/verify permissions.

I'm running 10.5.8 I couldn't get the Disk Utility app to work. So, I just reinstalled the whole system with DVD given to me. And I ran the Archive and Install, so all my files and apps won't be deleted.

Everything seems to be working normally again, but I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer to see if it lasts. Thanks for the suggestion!
