can't update firmware

I have a Mac AGP 400 with Jaguar and 9.2.1. I can boot to both.
I'm trying to update my firmware so I can install a new processor, but it refuses to allow me to do this.
Each time I go through the update process. When I start up my machine holding in the programmers button, it just stays black. i've held it for as long as 10 minutes. I've been trying this for 2 days now.
I'm trying to install firmware update 4.2.8. I'm booting from 9.2.1, not trying to go through Classic.

I can boot to terminal using Option-Command-O-F. I was hoping there might be a way to update the firmware from there, if the reboot trick isn't working.

I'm totally frustrated.

Normally I get a tone, but when I hold down the programmer button I get no sound and no video. The instructions say release the button after the tone, but it never comes.

Problem solved strangely. After 3 days and countless hours of trying to get the firmware to update with no success, I stumbled on a solution. I was just about to trash my OS 9.2 and had a friend coming over with 9.1. I decided to try once more and after holding in the reset button for a couple of minutes I got frustrated and started pushing the reset button. I pushed, and pushed, I pushed and held, I double pushed. Many pushes later, the machine springs to life, my monitor screen gets grey and a progress bar materializes at the bottom. It completes teh process and then does an imitation of pram zapping and suddenly the OS X apple appears on my screen. It boots to Jag and announces my firmware upgrade was successful. then I happily install my powerlogix 1 gig upgrade and it fires up without a hitch.
Happy new year.

Congratulations. I wonder if you just weren't getting that small button pushed in far enough?

I don't think I could have pushed the small button any harder. I always heard it "click" and could feel it move. While I was hammering away at the reset key i just maintained the same steady pressure that i had on the programmer key.
Beats me what happened.
