capture a recording from sony handycam

I´m a new mac user. I´ve tried to create a movie from my sony Handycam model miniDV Ciii 16k. it uses a memory stich and a recording tape.
When I plug the handycam cable on the USB port and turns on the handycam, the movie.app starts. Fine. But it only allows me to scan the handycam memory stich insteat of the tape, where the recording is.
I don´t have any instalation software, never needed before, since I used to use a Vaio computer and the capture process was simple.

Does your Sony Handycam have a Firewire port? It's possible that you may need to use that if so ....
