Cd Burning...

Nummi

happy (again)
I have a question: On every CD, it has some numbers printed on the front. The one I am looking at right now says 700MB / 80 min. My question is, can the CD only hold 80 min of music, or is that just an guess? I mean, if you burned 700 MB of MP3s onto a CD, that would be WAY more than 80 min of music.

it holds 700 MB of any type of file... which includes MP3's, which can be read by numerous mediums (mp3 players, dvd players, etc.) and it holds 80 Minutes of CD Audio which can be played in anything that will read CD Audio.

Example...
I could have 673 MB of MP3's and play them in an MP3 Player, but not in a standard CD Player.

I could have 76 Minutes of CD-Audio and play them in a standard CD player or anything else that will play the CDA (CD Audio) Format.

it's very simple to understand, sorry if i made it harder than normal...

okay...

700 MB of ANYTHING (which includes mp3's) and 80 MINUTES of CD-AUDIO.

there... hope that helps...

CD Audio is actually just the common AIFF format. If you've ever downloaded a music file in AIFF format, you'll know that it has an annoyingly huge file size. This is because it makes basically no compromises in quality. MP3s basically strip out all the sounds that you really don't hear, so it seems like the quality is still high (which it basically is, since you can't hear what was stripped out anyway) even though the file size has been reduced dramatically.

Because CDs want to maintain the highest quality, they are encoded in AIFF format. And, as BlingBling said, the 80 minute estimation on the front of the CD is in AIFF (CD Audio) format.

mp3 encoding actually removes sounds that you DO hear. You don't notice the sound missing because it does it in a manner that tricks your ear into thinking it heard the sound.
