CD insertion help

I'm having a bit of trouble with inserting any CDs into the CD drive. The computer doesn't even bother to try and read the CD, it just ejects it as soon as it's inserted. It also doesn't seem like it goes in all of the way, part of the CD is still sticking out of the drive. We're not entirely sure what has happened, but any ideas for fixing it would be helpful. Is it possible that we simply need to clean the lens?

Is it a CD-R or CD-RW? And if it is one and it was burned on a PC it probably has been burned so you can still burn to it. Thus, OS X can't open it. It has happened to me and my computer wouldn't even read it, it would just spit it back out. Hope this could help.

Is 'the computer' even a Macintosh?
If so, what model Macintosh is it?
What System / MacOS X version is currently installed?
Are the CD's being installed - commercial CDs, homemade CDs, both?

'Is it possible that we simply need to clean the lens?' - yes, it is a possibility.
