CD-R's and Sharpies

So I was talking to a friend the other day, who is pretty bright in the computer domain, and wouldn't just believe anything. He informed me that labelling CD-Rs with a sharpie is a bad idea, because eventually the Sharpie ink will eat through the plastic, thus corrupting the CD... He didn't remember where he heard this... Anyone hear anything similar? I've been labelling CDR's with sharpies for years!

I've been using sharpies for years too, and the fact that CD's burned back in '96 still work says to me this isn't a concern. Maybe I have to give it more than 6 years to disintegrate :p

not long before roxio abandoned their email peer support, there was a huge discussion about this. to sum it all up, yes there is the potential for danger. this potential is slim and only likely to occur with really cheap cd's. the same danger exists for the printed labels of cd software you buy. if it worries you, use a water based marker. at least some employees of roxio and the cd manufacturers use sharpies. i continue to use my sharpie.

basically the fear is that the data on your cd is actually right next to the top side, not on the bottom surface. so if there were to be leak thru or chemical destruction it would be the first place to be effected.
