CDRW in Firewire enclosure

I have a TDK velocd 48x20x16 or something like that. I understand it is marginally functional in a mac (my G4). Do you think it will be any less functional if I stick it in a firewire enclosure and attach it that way?
 
If it works in the bay, it will work in a FW enclosure usually. The question here is... will other apps like Toast recognised it..?
