Change preferences from the single user bootup

Mm, Im having a problem with panther, it gets stuck at STARTING LOGIN WINDOW. Now i waS wondering if any of you guys could help me change the preferences from the single useer bootup mode (cmd-s) to set autologin to some user. Or to change the login window format (currently they show up as icons, i wanna see if the other mode will work out).
