Changing directory admin passwd breaks AD emulation?

changed the password of my open directory administrative user (by logging into workgroup manager as root, as was suggested) and suddenly all my windows xp clients were dropped from the domain. I'd get 'unable to contact a domain controller or this computers account was deleted' when trying to login to the XP machines. I changed the password back to what it was, and things seemed to clear right up. The server is running 10.3.9.
Can this really be the case??
 
That's what I'm thinking, but this doesn't happen in a pure Microsoft AD domain. I've changed domain administrator passwords dozens of times in that sort of environment...
