Changing resolution with no monitor -- please help

My monitor was behaving ridiculously again today -- it was stretching out way too wide horizontally past the point where I could correct it with my monitor's hardware settings. It has been this way for a while -- a little bit is cut off on the left and right sides of my screen, though I've found it usable.

I started playing with resolution settings to see which ones had an acceptable horizontal width -- just a trial and error thing to assess the problem, and I chose some setting around 800x600 (I'm usually 1600x1200). I'm not sure if the HZ was up too high or what, but my monitor hasn't work since. I restarted (though It would have been better if I randomly click to change the res now that I think about it), nothing happened. Reset Pram, nothing. Plugged in my dad's monitor, that didn't work either. Restarted off the OS cd -- nothing.

Is there any way to change the resolution with keystrokes or via firewire file sharing or something? I'm not sure if it's my monitor's problem (some refurbed 23" gateway one) or my video card's (I have a G5 with an ati 9600 128mb I think), but I'm sure I could fix things if I could just change my resolution. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks!
 
I solved the problem, like what probably happens with most threads as soon as they're posted :)
I believe a bulb in the monitor cracked when I was changing resolutions, so I'm buying a new one

Well, that's not really what _I'd_ call "solving a problem", but if you're sure it's broken, there's of course only repair or replace.
