clamshell iBook on eBay

I'm thinking of buying one of the old clamshell iBooks, probably on eBay, (I don't know where else I could get one cheaply), mainly just as an alternative to my iMac, and for intense customising/playing-around-with-the-OS projects without damaging my actual computer. I'd probably use it for internet browsing, too, and as a portable typing machine.

Point is, I'm not sure that some of these deals aren't too good... I read a comment a couple of weeks ago that you're unlikely to get any working laptop for under $300... so, if anyone has the time, could you just tell me what you think?

Favourite - has 320MB RAM - iBook 1 - $76 - what's the idea of only having a 9" screen, though?
iBook 2 - $137
iBook 3 - $200 - is "I unfortunately have lost the box and orginal software" a little fishy (coming as it is with Photoshop 7 and all sorts of other desirables)?
iBook 4 - $20 ?!

How would installing Panther work, on the ones that don't already have it?

Thanks!

The price will continue to rise. I think they'll all reach 300 dollars. 9 inches is across, they all have 12 inch screens, measured diagonally. I really liked my 300 mhz clamshell, but a couple of caveats.

vram is 4 meg, won't play with keynote an other graphic apps and max screen res is 800 x 600, bummer for lots of websites these days.

the 3 gig hd (one has 6) is a bit small. It will run Jaguar (or Panther I guess) but there's not a lot of room for other stuff. Replacement is possible, but not for the faint hearted (that case is tight!)

no video output, so projection or using a full sized monitor is out.

By all reports, it will run Panther very nicely especially if you pop in a bigger hd

The next gen clamshells -g3 366 had better vram, video out and bigger hds. A google search for "used ibook clamshell" will give you a bunch of sites where they are for sale, in case your bid doesn't get it for you at ebay.
