Classic Quark and OSX Acrobat

I'm running Quark 4 on System 9.2. Would like to upgrade to OSX and run Adobe Acrobat for OSX, but would still like to use the OS 9.2 Quark. Will I be able to use the OSX Acrobat to convert files to .pdf in the OS9.2 Quark? Will it "show up" in the Quark Print window, or must I run an OSX Quark, or conversely, a 9.2 Acrobat? In other words, do both programs have to be the same OS in order to work together?

Thanks,

Yes, you will be able to create in Quark, save the file and open it with Acrobat in OS X.

The trick is to keep OS 9 on your drive (and your apps) and install OS X on the same drive. OS X is made to do this. You will have a choice of booting in OS 9 or OS X. You also can be in OSX.. start classic (OS 9) to work in Quark. To do this you must keep OS 9 on your drive. When you install OS X, do not erase or format the drive, just install.

Thanks so much for your reply, Cheryl. Yes, everything will be installed on the same hard drive -- must they be installed on the same partition? Just to clarify for me, does that mean that when I go to convert to .pdf in my OS 9 Quark, on that Print dialog page, the Acrobat Distiller option will appear, even though my Acrobat runs on the OS X system? In other words, the OS 9 Quark will "recognize" and use it?

Thanks so much, artanimal

We are running OSX in our design studio, and finally recently updated to Acrobat 6.0 Pro. Unfortunately the 'Print to Acrobat PDF] plug-in is rather fiddly to set up, requiring skills far beyond the average Mac OSX user (terminal session work etc). I'm still working on it, and I'm more experienced than most in the design profession with Mac OSX.

If you are going to move to OSX, definitely move to the all OSX Acrobat 6.0, as font activation between OSX and OS9 is not good with Acrobat 5.0 (which still has Distiller running in classic, which is the problem) and the various OSX type managers available (Distiller 5.0 lacks the ability to invoke font activation).

If at all possible, it is worth moving COMPLETELY to OSX, upgrading or replacing all OS9 apps with OSX versions or equivalents (InDesign is a much cheaper, and VASTLY superior alternative to Quark in my experience). You'll find it much smoother with just one OS (We had to have classic around for running distiller 5.0, and there were often issues with fonts).
