Classic won't start, but OS 9 will...

Here's one that's a little over my head. My dad can't get Classic to run anymore. He's on a G4/400 (I think), with OS X 10.1.2 and 9.2.2. Well, he just ran the 9.2.2 update and it didn't fix the problem. Before that he was running 9.2.1.

Here's the deal. He launches classic and it gets all the way through the boot screen until the very end. The classic screen goes to that generic blue and then never finishes booting up. If he reboots with extensions off through the OS X System Preferences Pane, then it works. But he can boot straight into OS 9 (sans OS X) and it works with everything running. Very strange as far as I'm concerned. So, how do fix a Classic problem that you can't recreate in OS 9? Any ideas? I haven't had him log in as another user, that would tell me if it were a problem specific to his Library...but I wouldn't know how to go about fixing it even if that were the case. In the meantime, I'll be praying to the gods :)

I had this problem a long time ago. I found that (i think) the culprit was the old MouseWare drivers. When I upgraded them, it worked. That said, I don't even use the MouseWare drivers anymore, but instead use USB Overdrive ;)

Or could that be MouseWorks? I don't know what the MouseWare drivers are. He's got a Kensington mouse, but I use MouseWorks at home and at work and it hasn't given me any problems in OS X or in Classic or in OS 9. I'll check into USB Overdrive though. Thanks...any other comments or suggestions are welcome.

MouseWare is the Logitech drivers...
Try starting up in classic using ONLY the base 9.2.2 extension set. See how that works.

As I mentioned previously, OS 9.2.2 runs great, with the standard extensions set as well as the base extensions. Which is why I find the problems so puzzling. It's as if Classic just can't finish booting up all of the sudden. There has been no software added to the system folder so I'm at a loss as to how to fix the problem, especially since it seems to be on the OS X side of things.
