client startup problem/blue screen/other box

I have OS X server 10.3.9 with 30 emacs running 10.4.2. When I come in in the morning and sometimes when a class comes into the lab some of the computers wake up with only a blue screen and others only have the user/pass boxes with no way of getting the list unless restarting. I can enter a user name and login but would like the list to show up.

The only way to fix the blue screen is to force restart.

Any one know a fix to this?
