Cloned from Powerbook to Dual 2.5 G5 - now what ??

I've already posted to the CCC forum but haven't yet got a definitive answer about this. I used CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) to clone my Powerbook 1.5 G4 to a Dual 2.5 G5 because I really didn't want to go through a month of reinstalling/reconfiguring my system.

The cloning procedure went very well I think.. I'm booted and running on the G5 and all the apps and plugins I have installed are working.

Fantastic ! only a few little "problems" it seems..

1. the G5 has a battery icon in the menu bar .. it has an "x" through it
2. in the Energy Saver, the processor settings still have "reduced" as an option (which I would think is a laptop-only option)

Neither of these things seem terrible to me--- but--- I'm scared that they might be indicative of looming issues I don't know about..

When I searched about this, I found that some people recommended reinstalling 10.3 and doing an Archive Install.

Would doing this (or anything else??) help my G5 to believe that it's a G5 and not a laptop ! (or, is there really not much to be worrying about ?)

Thanks :)

What you did was install the Powerbook files into the G5 which aren't needed, and most likely some files for the G5 are missing. Bad idea to do this.

I would wipe the drive and install a fresh system and install your software.

Unlikely it would take a month do complete all your installs, unless you're in prison and only have access to the machines an hour a week :)

hehehehe , i know it seems like it shouldn't take a month.. but this system was cloned from a previous powerbook so the system has been developing for a LONNNNNG time.. it's not just the installations.. some of it is preferences in certain apps.. yadda yadda.. It's a music production workstation..running Logic..

and I *did* in fact install very much the same system separately on another machine in my office, and guess what... a project that I have been working on in Logic will not open correctly there.. it seems that a music production setup plugins (especially w/regard to the preferences, paths, and patches, etc..) is sometimes really finicky.

after cloning the system, i was immediately able to perfectly open a music project i'm working on with no problem.. so if there are any other options to get my g5 setup working as best as it should (i.e. finding these missing files i'll need), i'd appreciate it.

I don't know exactly what files get installed for different models, but PowerBooks would have different Energy files. The G5 would have files for the processors.

Since the G5 got alot of mumbojumbo steering the fans, 64 bit stuff etc, i would also go for the clean install. do that, and then copy just the preferences folder from the powerbook.

A clean install is for the sure best way to have a save and fast system.

Now that you did your transfer, you can also do an Archive Install... or wait for Tiger to do an upgrade !

I'd still be curious to hear a more technical reason (other than.. "mumbojumbo")

:)

not that mumbojumbo isn't informative !! :)

The G5 fans are controlled by the OS, as are the Powerbook's but they no doubt work differently.

You shouldn't worry about doing a reinstall. Do an archive and install and your preferences will all be there as well as all your user accounts and data.

The only thing I think doesn't get kept is the stuff in the ApplicationSupport folders which would be required for some apps.

I've found that Final Cut Pro, Soudtrack, iMovie and so forth, require exact same paths to data, media files. Which means you can clone these applications to new machines, so long as disk/directory/.... structure is maintained they will work (fingers crossed)

However if you copy the apps or data to a new machine with different disk names, etc the Apps start saying they can't find the media and could you locate it, this can be a miserably long process, there is a work around for this though!

I would'nt clone from a G4 laptop to a G5 Dual processor (nice try though), not for the things that you KNOW about but for the host of things that you DON'T KNOW about, and I agree with you (the originator) that things may deteriorate.

My only problem with this is that most of these remarks are nonscientific and lacking of facts. What are these files that are system-specific that might control the fans.. etc.. and why couldn't problems like this be overcome by doing an archive reinstall of the OS ?

I imported a few times everythign from a G4 466 MHz to an eMac.. that worked fine; got error of too different architecture in the end, understandably, so I chose simply then to do "upgrade" from the OS X install CD. That made it clean the system on top of what it was, but I didn't need to install all the specific tools, and got even my GPG keys imported directly.
That could work to fix the differences, if your CD / DVD for the OS X install isn't too old. That is, have e.g. 10.3.2 on it, and your system that the CCC copied was, was 10.3.8 ...
