color bit depth limitations

Why is it that 4-bit or B&W bit depths cannot be supported in OSX?

The reason I ask is that I have wasted a lot of time trying to get the 68k emulator Basilisk II to run in 4-bit color. I want to play some old classic games that will only run in 16 colors, such as SimCity, Vette, etc.

Basilisk II allows a setting of 4-bit color to be set in the preferences, but after booting into the emulated environment (OS 7.5.5), it "forces" the bit depth back to 8-bit or higher (assuming because it wants to match the bit depth in OSX).

It 'almost' works when I set Basilisk II to run in 'windowed' mode, which sets the screen scrize to something strange like 512 x 384. It boots very slowly in the windowed mode, and then seems to crash when I select the 4-bit depth from within OS 7.5.5 (at least the option shows up!).

Frusting to get so close and not have it work....

I've read some vague posts on other forums relating to getting it to work by running the version of Basilisk for X11, but that's way beyond me.

I have an iMac G5 PPC 1.8GHZ with 1GB RAM and 10.4.7 installed.
