Compact Flash card readers

Howdy all,

Last week I bought a PQI flash card reader for $45AUD (cheapskate aren't I?) that said it would work in Mac OS 8.6 +
I took it home plugged it in (USB) and it froze every app that was open on my machine (itunes, terminal, everything).
Anyway, after a couple of cold boots I got the shits and took it back for a refund.

Then I bought a SanDisk one (for $85 AUD, also USB) which had "Built for OS X" on the packaging. 'Cool' I though, 'This will work'.
Did it - nope. Same thing as the cheapie - froze up everything that was running.

Went to the Apple site and found this:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article....alue=100&showSurvey=false&sessionID=anonymous|167925649
regarding flash cards not mounting.
Only problem is that I can't follow the fix because when a card is present in the reader I can't open a teminal window. They just open then shut immediately.
Has anyone had any experience getting a flash card reader to work simply and efficiently.
I was under the impression that Jaguar could handle having just about any disk or device plugged into it....
Cheers for any tales of experience

FWIW, I've never had a problem with flashcard readers. I've run 4 or 5 different kinds past my mac without incident. Usually, what I do is plug the reader in first, wait 20 seconds, then plug the card into it. But I've also just jammed the reader in with a card already there, and that seems to work ok too...

That said - couple of questions...

Are you plugging in through a keyboard or hub? does this happen if you plug directly in? Have you used other devices on the port to which your attaching (thinking hardware issue, maybe)? If you have the option, can you connect to a different port (even if you have to move the keyboard/mouse to a different port)?

Open a terminal, run tail -f /var/log/system.log and then plug in the reader. Any interesting messages there?
