dear ladies and gentlemen,

24 h ago i posted that it took me 7 min to boot my pismo after updating to 10.3.8
someone suggested i should throw out all items from the /library/startupitems folder. i must have gotten a wrong folder... i copied a long list of itmes onto a desktop-folder from (i think) System/startup.

Now it doesn't boot. the grey screen comes on with the apple logo and after a while of disc-movement it just stops. i can't boot it in secure mode (with pressing shift) and i can't boot it form the os x 10.3 CD-Rom... it starts with the CD-Rom but quits after a while, stopping at the grey screen not doing anything anymore.

pretty desperate: christoph.lindemann@gmx.net

thanks for your help!

there's nothing that you could have thrown out that would stop it from booting from the optical drive. i'm guessing you've done the "hold the c key down" thing? what about the option key? will the CD show up if you hold down the option key after the chime? (you may need to hit the circular arrow once or twice for it to show up)

Boot up with the option key held down. Don't let go till you see your drive icons. Then open your cd bay (hopefully you still have it!) and the cd logo should pop up within a minute or so (this way of booting is a bit slow).

You'll see two bootable items in the middle, one arrow on each side. You can scroll through all your bootable options with the left arrow; choose the boot disk with the right.

Hope this helps!

If you still had OS 9 on your Pismo (as I do) you could boot in OS 9 and back up your files before you start trying to fix this problem.

THANK YOU - i didn't know about the "hold down the c-key" thing and was able to start with 9.2.2. and just move the files back. it's all good now. gee. thanks, again.
