Computer in Dock

Howdy
You know the main starting point of the finder is the 'Computer'. Well how do i get that in my dock. I turned off everything that shows up on the desktop and now i just want a simple button in the dock to go to 'Computer'. But where do i find it to add it to the dock?

Good question! I ended up creating a new folder that I named "Drives" (really inventive, eh?). Then I put aliases of all my partitions into it, and stuck it in my Dock.
Later on, I moved it into my FruitMenu, which I like better.

I thought of saying something like this, but what about temporary volumes? For example, data CDs or dmg files. You'd have to go back to the desktop.

genghis: I prefer folder names that are indicative of the contents. That's why my Documents folder has not been renamed to "Slartibartfast". :) There's no shame in that...

If you click the Finder icon in the dock, it opens a new Finder window displaying the contents of "computer".

not necessarily... i believe there is a pref for that somewhere... i think you can also have it open to your home folder instead.

That's close. I just want another one. I need to re-name it something logical for those who use my computer when i'm not around. They'll see nothing on the desktop and freak. He he.

Ohh and i also make all removable media and dmg's open up in that 'Computer' window. No desktop crap. Well not now anyways. It always finds a way to build up.

My point is that if you make a directory that has aliases to your drives, then put that into the Dock, you'll miss all the removable media. You could have an alias to /Volumes, but would that make for an entry in the folder's context menu or a submenu from the context menu?

Sorry if this doesn't make sense -- it's Monday. :p

The easiest way would be to ask a cocoa-programmer. I just checked and with my setup, it was around 5 minutes of coding to get it to work, the problem is that I haven't digged myself into the environment variables of OS X, so at the moment I can't port it to another system. Go to the Cocoa forum and ask if someone is nice enough to code it for you or give me some days to find out about the environment variables and I will write a small app which opens what you demand on clicking...
