Connect a new Powerbook to the internet(isdn) through a XP pc via Ethernet

Hey guys!

I've searched the forum but couldn't find the information i needed, so i'm starting a new thread.
k, what's up:

i received my powerbook (15",1500,osx 10.3.8) yesterday and finally managed to set up a working (k... most of the time *g*) network via ethernet.
that's the first point... i seem not to know WHAT exactly i'm setting up/changing.
E.g.:
I saved a configurationset where i had a working network with the win-pc, but no internet.
then i created a new one to try to gain access to the net...as this wouldn't work, i deleted the new one and switched back to the old one, which worked before.
notice: NO CHANGES MADE TO THE OLD CONFIG!
what's next: i can't access.....why?
then i get it working again somehow, but i can't send im's via rendezvous...why?
But now my mainproblem:
My desktoppc is connected to the internet via isdn-card and the mac is connected to the pc via ethernetcable.
I've just given up trying to figure out myself how to set up the internetconnection via lan through a pc,that's why i'm BEGGING FOR HELP here

these are my current settings:

What's possible with this network:

+I can access the content of shared folders of the pc through aliases i'Ve made before

+I can access the pc on the macs network place to make new aliases& browse their content (i guess that's the usual file sharing between mac and pc, though i don'T like it ;) )

+I can access the content of shared folders of the mac via the normal "My network places" on windows

What's NOT possible:

-Internet

-Rendezvous

I hope i didn't forget anything...
anybody got any ideas?

Hi rontz und willkommen im Forum. ;-)
I will go on in english so other ppl will be able to add some comments.
Basically your network seems to work correct: you can access the pc. But your problem actually lies on the missing internet-sharing. I have no idea how you are testing rendezvous between apple and pc?!
However, let's take a closer look at your internet share issue:
1. I would rather keep the panther network settings on automatical using the dhcp mode and without manual ip. Don't even declare the routers ip.
2. Make sure the lan nic of your windows xp box is set to a fixed ip (192.168.0.1) while the isdn internet-connection should have an automatical ip but be shared to the lan connection that is used for the mac and pc (you can only share the internet connection to one nic-environment; just in case you have few other nics installed in your windows box).
3. Make sure the isdn connection is established while you attempt to get online with your mac. (just for the beginning)
4. check out if you can ping www.test.de from your terminal. If that fails, we should think of other solutions.
Good luck!

Hey sam! :) finally a reply!:D
ok... what's NEW:
rendezvous is working like this:
if i write a msg from the pc first, to the mac, i can do a normal conversation.
BUT if i try to send a msg from the mac BEFORE this connection is established, i get a rendezvous error.
I'm testing this with trillian pro on pc, it supports rendezvous.
i still can access the pc from the mac, and i got internet sharing on and the lan ip of the pc is 192.168.2.2, its dns is 192.168.2.1.
k, now i set the dhcp to total auto. rendezvous shows me the contacts but i can'T send messages anymore. the pc isn't accessable through the mac anymore, as well.
i can'T ping any url like this. not even the pc.
ok.. from the static ip i can ping the pc and access it (oh wonder *g*), but i can'T ping any url.

Thanks for help! :)

Ok, I will first "go over" your rendezvous problem, since I am not familiar with this network protocol and the tools using this.
How many nics do you have in your pc? I am asking since this seems to be the problem. There must be a little detail wrong. Are you sure the internet share is available for the correct lan connection? Do you have another pc to test the internet share? It should work the way you are describing it. I had the same configuration some months ago when we changed our dsl provider and used the isdn line for internet. Since there are no isdn routers we used the winxp pc for routing the whole network.
So, in short: we'll fix your problem. Don't worry. :)

i don'T mind about rendezvous working or not, i just thought it could be a clue of what's missing ;)

i've got just one ethernet card in the pc, plus one isdn-card.
i'm not sure if the internetshare is working for the lan connection and actually never tried it before.i haven't seen any options where i could have chosen the network connection. i just checked the option i mentionned above.
sadly i don't have any other pc to test it right now, perhaps tomorrow.

i hope we can get it working, though i'm doubting *g* my win is the hell :D
thanks for help again :)

Let me just say how I had it all setup:
LAN:
IP: 192.168.0.1
subnet: 255.255.255.0
All other protocols and tools (QoS package...) off but TCP/IP
firewall off
not shared to the network

DFÜ-Verbindung (through isdn; this is the connection you double click to get into the internet):
IP: automatic
subnet: emtpy if possible
firewall: on
shared: to LAN

This is how it should work, or something else is screwed up which can be about everything on windows. :) I think it would be very helpful to get another pc to test the internet share.

hm... i just noticed that i get the error message when connecting to the net:

tcp/ip connected

ipx/spx error 733. "not possible to connect to remote computer"

has this anything to say?

GOT IT WORKING! :)

:D
YEAH :D

just ran the xp-connection wizzard (dunno what it changed... looks same to me as before :D)
then i did exactly what you said then:
ip: 192.168.0.1
subnet: 255.255.255.0
no default gateway

dns-server: auto

only difference is, that i have many other protocolls installed.

then i ran the wizzard of my mac, and finally he found everything he needed with dhcp :) !

he wizzards do the thing :D

thanks for help again!!!! :)

well, you helped yourself. Happy it's working now. Anyway, I am surprised you are on isdn. Isn't that more expensive than dsl?

yup.
we had dsl before, but then we moved to a village 5 km away from the old one, and dsl isn't available here O.o
btw... hint for ALL OF YOU:
if you've got a working connection: don'T touch the options!!! *LOL*
i changed a bit (only on the pc-side) and can'T get it working again :D
