connect DVD player to TV

I have a Powerbook G4 with 256 MB. I can use the TV as an external monitor, BUT I can't see the DVD viewing screen on the TV. I am prohibited from lowering the viewing screen into the area displayed on the TV. Can someone please explain step-by-step how to view DVDs on the TV? Thank you.
 
You should have two choices in the Displays preferences pane: 1. Use the TV as a mirror of your Mac display. Using this setting, the TV will show everything that appears on your monitor, but only what appears on your monitor. 2. Use the TV as expanded display space. Using this setting, the TV and monitor will display different images. You can move windows from one display to another, but they don't show the same thing simultaneously.
