Connected but No Internet

According to both "Network - Network Status" and "Internet Connect" I am connected to the net via my Netgear Router (WGR614 v4), which in turn is being fed by a SBC DSL Modem. This is on my Powerbook G4. The iBook sitting right next to the Powerbook is fine using the same wireless system, and they are both fine via "Ethernet". Using "Traceroute" in "Network Utility", I traced to a site using both wired and wireless on my Powerbook, the results were basically identical. I am not much of a network engineer by any means but it seems strange that the Traceroute appears to be fine on the wireless side, yet I can not get to any web sites or check mail.

The computer that I am having the problem with is only about three weeks old, and when I first got it the wireless worked flawlessly. I have tried both Safari and Firefox. Any suggestions on how to proceed.

Do their TCP/IP settings look identical?

Hello Bill,

Yes, well at least now they do. I had to change one digit in the DNS Server data but that didn't make any difference. Other then that, and of course each computer has a different IP Address, all of the other settings are the same.

Still Baffled.

Hi Charles,
just few questions: are you able to access the routers interface in your browser from the powerbook? If yes, make sure there are no security settings on on the router such as MAC filters, WEP / WPA encryption. If you can't access the routers interface (and this I think should be the case) set all network settings to automatic and as well as in the previous step: turn off all security settings. Are you using selfassigned IPs or automatically derived from the dhcp?

Sam, and Others,

Yes, I could access the interface, but only using wired ethernet. I did have IP's assigned via MAC address's but they all appeared to be in order. WEP was on, turned it off with no success. I then begin to have problems with the other wireless computer which had been working fine. I eventually reset the router to the factory default, bingo problems solved. I don't think I will ever know what the exact problem was, but it is working beautifully right now.

Thanks to all for your support!!!

Factory default means security issues. You obviously had a problem with the settings on your router when it came to wifi. It was not related to internetshare, since you weren't even able to access the router wirelessly. Here is an idea to overcome the security issues: Turn on MAC filters on the MAC-adresses you are using. Check if things still work fine. Then turn on WEP and make sure, you set it up properly on the other computers. I know, things work fine now but your network is probably completely insecure now.
