Connecting a 7200 to a Dell to share files and net connection

Somewhere... dunno though
How would I use a crossover cable or regular ethernet cable to share the internet connection (and possibly files) from Windows 2000 with OS 8.1.

any help would be umm... helpful! :D

Windows 2000 has a feature that allows you to share an internet connection. It works by acting as a dhcp server on the windows client. The feature i believe is called "Share Internet connection." If you search the windows help database, you will be able to get more in depth information about it. I do not know, however, if this will work with a Mac connected to it. My experience has only been to connect other window machines.

Give it a try though, and let me know how you make out.

To share files between your PC and Mac, use DAVE. It allows Macs and PC's to recognize each other on the network.

Peace.

I've had my friend do that at his house. He has his DSL setup so that the computer it is connected to "Shares this connection" with the rest of the house. However my mac being over there before has had no problem using the internet. The Windows 2000 internet sharing does not care who it's sharing to. The only thing one has to make sure of is. The Computer sharing the internet has to have a Stationary IP address. And all computers that want to use this internet have to have "DHCP SERVER" set in the TCP/IP control panel. The last thing to check before going on the internet is to see if the windows computer has an "Active" hardlan connection. This is usually hidden. To find this you go to "Start" -> "Settings" -> "network connections" -> and then you should see something other than the "make a connection" wizard. That other connection is the connection to the you. If it says "network cable unplugged" or something like that, all you have to do is "refresh" it. By this I mean right clicking on it and "disable" and then right click it again and "enable" it. After it is done enabling it should say that you have a connection. If not then make sure both sides of the cable are securly in(I made this mistake once before, it seemed so stupid, but that is what was wrong with it). Anywhoo, after all that you should be able to get on the internet and do what ever you feel like.

For file transfers, I also recommend dave. Or you can solve the problem from the other side and install "PC MAC-LAN" from Miramar Systems.

Happy surfing!!!!
