Connecting to an NT server: Error -36

I have been trying to connect my PowerMac OS X to my company's NT server for months. I get "error -36" before I am given the chance to log in. I know that this error means the connection was refused by the NT server, but don't know why.
My research indicates that it may be a problem with open ports; I've also considered the possibility that the firewall may be fouling things up (although both the server and my Mac are inside it). I know this can work, because I can connect to another NT server (also inside the firewall).

Suggestions?

I don't know about NT Server, but connecting my mac to a windows 98 machine would not work until I set "share" on the windows drive... Its pretty obvious, but kept me in the dark for about a month. The fact that it's a NT server makes it different though, this was just a laptop with windows 98.
