Connecting via hardwire not working

At home, I have a wireless network...so i installed an airport extreme card. it works great.

however, when I come to school...i need to connected via hardwiring it using the built-in ethernet. i'm new with the Mac, I just got a powerbook. its my first one. I put all my settings in...noticing there wasn't a place for the gateway...and nothing happens. I double checked everything...triple checked everything...and i can't find anything at all wrong with my set up...

and it just doesn't work...am i missing something???

Here's my checklist:
- Make sure you're using a vaild network jack by plugging an existing machine in and seeing if it will connect to the network. I'd estimate half the jacks in my particular building are damaged or not connected to anything.
- Make sure your cable is OK, likewise, by using it with an existing machine and checking that it sees the network.
- Start with your settings on Automatic, allowing it to use DHCP to find an IP address. Don't worry about domains or gateways. If it is working, an IP address will appear in the IP field.
- If that doesn't work, ask your network admin if there are any particular settings you should be using to access the network. You might need to manually assign an IP address.
- Fire up a PC or mac that is already on the network and working correctly and examine the settings it is using. Windows machines use slightly different terms for some things, such as "gateway", though you should be able to see what the settings are.

thanks man!

I finally got it working...using DHCP w/ Manually Configured IP

I was trying it with manual configuration...which is how it is on my PC...

Thanks!
