I'm trying to set up my Mac Mini (Intel) running 10.4.8 to connect to my Linux file server.
My initial attempt was using SMB. I have also tried AFP. In BOTH cases the share disconnects after a few clicks in Finder. This is the only Mac I have, but the SMB share worked flawlessly with an XP box. I have been dutifully shutting one service down before starting the other.
I've tried:
Using wireless.
Using wired Ethernet.
Disabling the firewall on the Mac.
Disabling the firewall on the server.
Checking the Console log on the Mac. Nothing.
Checking the SAMBA log on the server. Nothing.
In both cases when I connect I can see the files in the share, and can navigate down a folder or so before I get the "beach ball". When using SMB the eventual error is "server connection interrupted", with AFP it's "the file server localhost has closed down". I don't know why it thinks the server is "localhost". It's in my /etc/hosts file and I'm connecting to it by name.
Thanks for any advice!
