Copying non-copy-protected DVDs?

A friend sent me a DVD (made in iDVD) of his documentary-in-progress. Is there any way that I can make and burn a duplicate DVD from this original? I've read about VCD's, and I'd prefer not to go that route as it sounds quite cumbersome.

iDVD doesn't want to recognize the VIDEO_TS files from the DVD. Did Apple write iDVD this way to prevent piracy of copyrighted DVD's?
 
Do you have a dvd burner? If so, you should be able to make a disk image straight from the dvd, and then burn the image. (I know it works with cds). I think you can do both steps with disk utility.

You shouldn't have to bother with vcds unless you are trying to get a dvd's worth of video down to something you can burn with a cd burner.
