Has any one built one of these machines and run any tests or used one and would anyone recommend one as a cheaper alternative for running OS X.

From what I read, it seems to be a good alternative. But keep in mind you still need a CD drive, hard drive, keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor, RAM, etc. Unless you get their fully assembled models. Then you just need the keyboard, mouse, & monitor.
It's only a 90 day warranty and according to the web site: 1st and most important, the CoreBox is not supported or endorsed by Apple. It is a project setup to introduce the power of Apple motherboards into an expanable, low cost design.

My 2 cents.... this might be in the courts.
