Could the iPhone (and more) be far behind?

That looks like a couple of truly fascinating patents. It would be interesting to see what could become of them should they ever see real-world use.

I'm betting we'll see the "Customizable, dynamic and on-demand database-informer for relational databases" patent used in Leopard in some way, long before we see the other two patents used.
 
Agreed. The mechanical patents (keyboard and ipod interchangeable covers) will take R&D and ramp up to implement. Probably several years unless they've already started ahead of the patent application...
 
It is starting to look likely, but I'll believe it when I see it. I must say an iPod phone does seem more likely than an iPhone in addition to an iPod. I hope they bring it out just for Apple's sake -- there will be a lot of irritated people after MacWorld if they don't!

I don't know how much I like the idea of a snap-on phone attachment though. A phone needs to be a phone 100% of the time, otherwise what's the point?
 
I think the most exciting part of these patents is the ability to change your laptop into virtually any device you want it to be as well as adding an additional screen if you deam it worthwhile. Imagine placing a musical keyboard over the top of your actual keyboard area to mess with Garageband on the road or never having to depress another key again... it's just a lovely idea of a technology.
 
i just thought out something with the iPhone. Presumably, even if it's not an iPod phone, it will still have some sort of iTunes integration. If so, I imagine it will be possible to turn any itunes track into a ringtone. I'm not a big fan of ringtones myself (mine is set to boring ring ring atm), but this would be a blow to the ringtone companies who are currently sucking consumers dry with their ridiculous prices.

then again, maybe i'm out of the loop and phones have been doing this for a long time.
 
yeah, as long as phones have had bluetooth and mp3 support, ringtones have been a doddle. i've not bought a ringtone yet i don't think. i currently have 4th December off the Grey Album as my ringtone.
